Help Dominique get a wheelchair

d-give-forwardUpdate: We are happy to let everyone know that all of your support has helped us raise enough money to purchase a new custom fit wheelchair for Dominique. He has put the chair on order and we’ll post a picture once it arrives. Thanks everyone!

On October 18, 2013, one of our teammate’s, Dominique “D” Rogers, had his everyday wheelchair stolen from Southeast Albuquerque. This chair was built specifically for him. Without this chair he has no way to get around independently. The wheelchair is essentially his legs. We can’t imagine who would do something so terrible. We are raising money to help cover the cost of a new chair and could use everyone’s support. Any amount helps!

We’ve set up a GiveForward page to try to raise money. Follow this link if you can help contribute:

Kings Wheelchair Basketball News

_DSC8799Lots of news coming from the Wheelchair Basketball program!

The Albuquerque Kings finish the season as the #5 team in the nation after heading to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Co. They competed in the NWBA National Championships from March 22-25. 16 teams where chosen from the highest division in the NWBA. The Kings finished the season with 14 wins and 3 losses and with a 3 win 1 loss showing at Nationals. Two Albuquerque Kings made the First and Second All tournament teams this year as well.

The Division III team continues to grow with each practice. Currently we graduated 2 junior Kings up to the Division III level. We hope to help promote D-III during the off season with goals of sending a competitive group out to tournaments.

The Junior Kings continue to grow! More kids than ever have joined the program far exceeding our expectations. Just last week (April 7th) the JR Kings had an Exhibition Game, assisted by Communication Students from the University of New Mexico. The JR Kings played an exhibition game today against some UNM Lobo basketball player volunteers. Final score was a tie 40-40. Good times!!! Thanks for all the volunteer, fan, and players who participated!

Whats next?
– Kings are working on a summer youth camp for wheelchair basketball.
– We begin off season practice, a great time for those interested in playing to come out and learn more about rules, learn wheelchair skills and basics, get a great workout.
– Fundraising, meet-and-greets, community service.
– Duke City Classic Tournament prep and planning – expected tournament date October 2012.
– Much more!

Junior Kings Exhibition Game April 7th

jr4A group of 5 Communication Students from the University of New Mexico are working in conjunction with the Albuquerque Junior Kings Basketball Team to host an exhibition game with the Junior Kings.

The exhibition is intended to raise awareness for an amazing program for disabled youth in Albuquerque and provide a venue for the youth to compete against volunteers from the community. Volunteers will be playing in chairs for the day. Prizes and competitions will be part of the fun for spectators. Admission is free however; donations to the Albuquerque Kings will be accepted. The event is an extraordinary chance to showcase the youth’s talents and raise community awareness.

On Saturday, April 7th, 2012 the tournament will take place at 11am and the Job Corps facilities on Indian School west of 12th Street.

For more information on the hearing or the subject matter, please contact Kathy James.
